We are here to help you navigate these tough waters. So let's get started!

Family issues can appear in many forms. Sometimes they are sudden changes like divorce or separation. But other times, it can be long drawn - like in the case of abuse. People do not discuss these things outside the family. Most of us think other families are perfect, so it may be unpleasant to share our own struggles with others. This also means that we feel alone and do not know who to turn to. This website will help you recognize what is happening, will help you understand that you are not alone and will give you resources to do your best in school and life.

I have personally dealt with these situations and have interviewed many people in the field to come up with plans that can help us in these difficult situation.

WE CAN HELP YOU WITH

UNDERSTANDING YOUR FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS

Every family will experience change and conflict and with it many feelings of excitement, hope or despair. In the case of unpleasant changes, these feelings can be confusing and overwhelming. We will first help you understand these feelings, what you can do about them and how you can move forward.

PLANNING

Depending on the situation, you may have to make a plan to find help - like someone to talk to or turn to in case you need help. We will share some sample plans for you to use.

WHO TO TURN TO

There are many ways you can find help. Who you approach depends on your particular situation. I have talked to experts in the field and read many articles on the matter. You can find pointers here and here

DOING YOUR BEST IN SCHOOL AND LIFE

When your family is going through tough situations, it is easy to lose focus on your school and work. I have been there. While it is pretty impossible to operate as normal, I can share some tips and techniques that have helped me through these hard times.

IN CASE OF EMERGENCY

If you are in immediate danger or need help right away, call 911 or your local emergency number (usually listed at the front of the phone book). The emergency operator will want to know why you’ve called, what’s happening and where you are calling from. They’ll want to know who’s involved and whether you know if there are any weapons there. They’ll also want to know if anyone is hurt. When the emergency helpers get to where you are, they’ll probably stay until everyone has calmed down. Depending on how serious the situation is, they may take the violent person back to the police station with them.

 WHAT ARE FAMILY TRANSITIONS?

This is any time a family has some major disruptions like divorce, separation or abusive situations like domestic violence.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING FAMILY TRANSITIONS?

Every situation or transition is unique and no two situations can be totally alike. Sometimes both parents are able do be there for you in spite of the tough times. But in some other situations adults in your family will be facing their own challenges and perhaps do not have the time and attention for you.

WHAT FEELINGS MIGHT YOU HAVE DURING THIS TIME?

There's no doubt about it — these are very difficult situations, whether it is your parents splitting up, or there is tension or conflict in the house, or you are watching one parent struggle with an abuser. In fact, it might be the hardest thing you've ever had to deal with!

You may have seen this coming, or may have come out of the blue. Na matter what the situation is,  you will probably experience some intense emotions like confusion, anger, anxiety, sadness and sometimes even relief and hope.

STEPS YOU CAN TAKE IF YOU ARE FEELING ALONE.

During this time, you may feel very alone. You may look at your friends, see their perfect families and be hesitant to tell them what is happening. But there are people who can help you. You can find some ideas on who to approach or talk to here and here.
